2K BY GINGHAM - TAKING THE ORGANIC ROUTE.

Graphic giants of the fashion world, 2K, are changing their course slightly this summer.A new range of organic t-shirts are to be released in 2008 as well as trucker caps made in Los Angeles.

John Amis from 2K by Gingham said: “We are admittedly a little behind on the organic scene, but have answered the call and are printing select art on organic t-shirts. We continue to produce a custom t-shirt body made entirely in the U.S. We are constantly trying to improve upon the fit and feel, it’s never ending.”

The brand is also planning to work with fewer artists this year to hone in on a leaner menu of graphic designs. Amis said: “As we see from our wholesale site, the range of artists and designs is extensive and ‘artistically overwhelming’ as some would politely comment. Therefore, it may be an opportune year to make subtle adjustments to our line up with a little artful belt tightening.

We look forward to a colourful summer.

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS - WE CARRY ON PLAYING

This month saw Daniel Day-Lewis collect a well-earned BAFTA and Oscar for best actor in the epic film “There will be blood.” Nailing the role of Daniel Plainview, a dedicated oil prospector, Day-Lewis picked up his third BAFTA award and his second Oscar.

Fashioning a Paul Smith Bespoke suit that had been commissioned especially for him from Westbourne House, Daniel Day-Lewis gave a speech so beautiful that it could have been mistaken for an epilogue in itself. “In Greenwich Park, Blackheath, the streets of Deptford, Lewisham, New Cross, the bombsites on the Isle of Dogs, the wharfs and shadowy lane ways of the southeast London Docks, the terraces of Millwall Football Ground, those are the playgrounds of my early life. We carry on playing and we need playmates. Or otherwise we’re just playing with ourselves.”

Day-Lewis is one of many actors who do justice to the elegance of Paul Smith. But, stealing the show at the British Academy Film Awards with his genuine humility and cultured flair, the team at Paul Smith are very proud of the London-born actor…and rightfully so.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD OPUS - WESTWOOD THE REVOLUTIONARY

An insight into the enigma that is Vivienne Westwood is now in print. The Vivienne Westwood Opus was launched this month revealing a deeper understanding of her designs, her passions and her manifesto. Teaming up with Kraken Opus, the groundbreaking fashion designer aims to encourage all intellectuals to fight propaganda.

2005 saw Westwood collaborate fashion with international politics as she designed t-shirts with ‘Leonard Peltier is Innocent’ across the front to challenge the Government’s policy on detaining people without trial.

Quoting the dystopian writer Aldous Huxley, Westwood is continuing her anti-propaganda theme in the new book, which is available to the public worldwide.

Vivienne Westwood’s philosophy resonates like a Che Guevara rallying call. She said: “I make the great claim for my manifesto, that it penetrates to the root of the human predicament and offers the underlying solution. We have a choice: to become more cultivated, and therefore more human; - or by not choosing, to be the destructive and self-destroying animal, the victim of our own cleverness (To be or not to be).

Only 900 copies of the book will be published but glimpses of the manifesto can be found on her website. Each Edition is priced £1400

FISCHER WAS THE GREATEST CHESS PLAYER WHO EVER LIVED.

One of the icons of the 20th Century Robert James Fischer, former world champion in chess, is dead. He is considered to be one of the most gifted chess players of all time and, despite his prolonged absence from competitive play, is still among the best known of all chess players.Fischer became World Chess Champion in Reykjavík Iceland in 1972.

Fischer became the US chess champion at only 14, the youngest in history. He became world champion after a victory over Spassky in 1972 following one of the most famous duels in chess. Fischer renounced the title in 1975 and played publicly only once against Spassky in Yugoslavia following his win.

Bobby Fischer became the world's youngest grandmaster in chess in 1959 at the age of 15. Icelandic grandmaster Fridrik Ólafsson said that there was no doubt that Fischer was the greatest chess player who ever lived.

VIVIENNE WESTWOOD BOOTS - DILEMMA, COLLECT OR WEAR?

Congratulations to Dame Vivienne Westwood who recently picked up the top honours at the British Fashion Awards. In recognition of her revolutionary approach to fashion she received the Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design award.

It’s that time of year when Vivienne Westwood starts shipping her new boots for autumn. It’s what every avid fan and collector wait for all season. But it's a dilemma, do you collect them or wear them, I suggest that if you asked Vivienne she would say 'wear them darling!'.

The styles to arrive so far are the ‘Elevated’ knee high boot in black patent leather with concealed platform sole, the ‘Granny’ boot in a soft, stone, wrap around leather and elephant grey buckles and the ‘Baroque’ Shoes with a lace up front. These are some of my most favourite items.

D.I.E. - 'BETTER DEAD THAN BURIED!'

D.I.E. or Denim Is Everything takes you on a walk to the darker side of things, where everything isn’t quite as it seems to be. Beneath the bright colours lurks a sea of horror movie, 1950’s Zombies, punk rock inspired design finishes and graphics.

Reynald Gautier and Marcus Martinez formed D.I.E in 2004. D.I.E was born from their common preferences for comic books, horror films, and music by bands such as The Guana Batz, The Meteors, in addition to the their most influential interest and concrete fascination: skateboarding. The latter helped them form a sense of independence and life philosophy, which was instrumental in the creation of D.I.E.

D.I.E or Denim Is Everything, is not as its name may suggest, a puritan denim brand. It is however, a way of thinking, a lifestyle taking its inspiration from life interests, friendships, experiences, memories and family from both Reys’ and Marcus’ lives past and present. In the collection denim may be dead but as they say it’s ‘better dead, than buried!’

WHY DO WE BUY CHEAP CLOTHES AND NOT ASK WHERE THEY COME FROM

Coggles was shocked but not surprised to read that one of Britain’s richest men is profiting from Asian workers paid less than £3 to £4 a day to make clothes for his latest Kate Moss range for Topshop as reported by the Sunday Times.

Topshop, Topman, Burton, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge, which are owned by Sir Philip Green's firm Arcadia Group, employ hundreds of Sri Lankans, Indians and Bangladeshis who work 12 hours a day, six days a week.

A worker at Star Knitwear, which makes T-shirts for the Topshop Kate Moss range, said they were paid £112 a month - equivalent to about 40p an hour. The T-shirts are sold in Topshop for £12. You have to assume therefore that as you walk home from the shops smug in the fact that the clothes that you bagged that were so cheap and therefore ‘throw-away’, someone somewhere on this planet is paying for that garment with their freedom with pure slave trade pay and conditions.

There is growing concern at Coggles and within the UK fashion industry over the use of Third World labour. Jane Shepherdson, who resigned from Topshop as brand director last year, said consumers cannot keep buying cheap clothes and “not ask where they come from”.

An investigation by War on Want (www.waronwant.org) revealed recently that some of Britain's other best-known high street brands are selling "cheap chic" clothes at the expense of workers in Bangladesh despite pledges to protect basic labour rights, War on Want says bargains in Britain, such as jeans for £3 and cocktail dresses for £6, are possible only because retailers wrench lower prices from suppliers in Bangladesh who get clothes stitched at the lowest possible cost.

War on Want says that although Primark, Asda and Tesco have stated publicly they will limit the working week and pay a "living wage" overseas, these commitments are flouted in their suppliers' factories. Geoff Lancaster, head of public relations at Primark, said the company had been involved in trying to raise standards in Bangladesh and would investigate. It denied it was cutting costs so British shoppers benefited from cheap prices.

If you could see the conditions of the person who made your £3 tshirt or jeans which you wore once and threw away, and then had to watch them make that garment 12 hours a day, six days a week you my change your shopping habits. On this island we care about animal cruelty and environmental issues but don’t really give a s**t about our fellow human being.

It’s a basic fact that if you buy ridiculously cheap priced clothes you are abusing the planets resources and it’s inhabitants, change now, sorry rant over! - Mark Bage

BANKSY VS WARHOL FACE-OFF

Coggles recommends seeing the face-off between two giants of pop art. Banksy Vs Warhol is a new exhibition at The Hospital gallery and club in Covent Garden, London with more than 40 works on display, which pits the genius of the late American Andy Warhol against Britain's contemporary iconoclast, graffiti artist Banksy. Anyone who has ever wandered among the pretentiously hip Shoreditch, Hoxton or Bricklane areas of London will have inadvertently seen Banksy’s handy work. Warhol is defending his title, but Banksy makes for a formidable challenger as he has received maximum exposure since 2000.

The exhibition showcases work, which demonstrates how Banksy was influenced and inspired by Warhol. This includes portraits of Kate Moss that echo Warhol's iconic pictures of Marilyn Monroe from more than 40 years ago. Banksy also created a version of Warhol's soup paintings replacing the Cambell's images with that of Tesco's own-brand soup as a homage to Warhol. Banksy Vs Warhol is the first side by side exhibition anywhere by the world’s two hottest artists. To see more of Banksy's work che-che-checkout his latest offerings at http://www.banksy.co.uk/

Campbell’s or Tesco? Grace Kelly, Muhammad Ali, Winston Churchill, Mick Jagger, Queen Elizabeth, The Beatles, Smiley Man police statue, Andy Warhol himself and others make for a potent cocktail of celebrity, satire and voyeurism. Opposing pictures are explosive for their contrast, even of the same subject. However, there is at least one difference between the two: whereas Warhol was at the hub of New York society, Bristol-born Banksy likes to keep a low profile.

COGGLES LAUNCHES SIENNA MILLER'S TWENTY8TWELVE

I agree that most celebrity collections are just a mixture of vanity and bad marketing ideas but in this case the subtle design and sheer quality really do shine through when you wear the garments. I was expecting a typical jeans and t-shirt collection but the sisters have really created an exceptional debut fashion collection.

Sienna Miller was born in New York City in 1981. She moved to England as a child. Prior to her professional acting career, Sienna worked as a photographic model. Following her appearance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2004, she was credited by many with having popularised the fashion style of boho-chic in Britain. Sienna also posed for Vanity Fair magazine's 2006 Hollywood Issue topless and smoking a cigarette.

Sienna appeared in supporting roles in the 2004 remake of the 1966 movie Alfie as well as in Layer Cake (2004). She played the female lead opposite Heath Ledger in the period drama, Casanova (2005). She also stared in Factory Girl (2006), a film about 1960s socialite and Andy Warhol's muse Edie Sedgwick. Although the film has been deemed controversial, her performance has received acclaim. Sienna’s relationship with Jude Law has been frequently featured in the entertainment press so I’ll not dwell on it here.

Twenty8Twelve, gets its name from Sienna Miller's date of birth. Sienna has designed the label's first range along with her sister Savannah Miller who is a Central St. Martins graduated fashion designer. The new label is skinny jeans, bib front t-shirts and mini tux jackets. References from 70's New York and Dickensian suits are brought to life by Sienna's instinctive sense of style and Savannah's Central St Martin's reputation. Twenty8Twelve isn't just fashion it is beautifully made clothes.

The Twenty8Twelve collection is now available from coggles.com

COGGLES MUSIC REVIEW

BEASTIE BOYS - THE MIX UPI always loved The Beastie Boys until their last album which made me think ‘Fuck it. This band’s finished’, but it’s kind of shocking that The Mix-Up is actually good. They may be well into middle age, but those Beastie Boys still know what the people want. On this fully instrumental album, their first since The In Sound From Way Out!, the trio dive deep into 12 tracks of kitsch punk funk, with big (un-sampled) breaks rocking every moment. Album opener, “B for My Name” shakes with a bell-bottomed funk and the sound of MCA peeling off bass lines that wouldn’t be out of place in a Blaxploitation underworld of fedoras, long black overcoats, and hand-cannons. -****

RATATAT - REMIXES VOL.III stumbled upon the news that Ratatat the duo from NYC that mastered the craft of electronic instrumental music have a second remix album out at the moment and unlike there previous releases I’m now a fan. Ever since The Grey Album, everyone thinks that they can remix a rap acapella and make it hotter than the original. This assumption is wrong. However, Ratatat prove to be the exception, with 14 innovative bootlegs that rival, and sometimes better, the originals. Their funky take on Biggie’s “Party & Bullshit” is a master stroke, the album also contains 14 new remixes featuring: Bun B, Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Slim Thug, Devin the Dude, Young Jeezy, T.I., Beanie Sigel, Pimp C, Ludacris, Young Buck, Saigon, Juvenile, Z-ro, Memphis Bleek, and Kanye West. -***

OUTLINES - OUR LIVES ARE TOO SHORTOutlines dapper northern soul remix of DJ Mehdi's 'Lucky Boy', then you won't be disappointed by their debut LP. The album is packed with good vibes and pop melodies. But more than that, it proves that young musical Paris can do more than just killer electo. At times it's as anaemic as a supermodel training school. But cut with a little more spice, as on the brilliant Now That I Am Free (with Wu-Tang's RZA in attendance), the results are as warming as moments of sunshine in our dank, grey summer. -**
