Jacques Audiard’s astounding prison drama is a brilliant example of character-driven action cinema. It tells the story of a young French Arab who finds himself in prison with no friends or allies. He is singled out by a dominant Corsican gang and has to undergo a gruelling rite-of-passage, but as time goes by he gradually forms a power base of his own inside and outside of prison. It is an enthralling, fingernail biting, brutally authentic film.
